about

At CalArts I studied with Amiya Dasgupta (1924-1994), a North Indian classical sitarist, vocalist, and composer. We became friends outside the classroom and in 1981 I produced a small East Coast tour for him. At the end of my tenure at the school he and I recorded a cassette of several of his compositions for me to take home. One of these pieces was a tarana (a style of Hindustani vocal composition incorporating certain words and syllables) in Raga Sindhi Bhairavi set to Teental, a rhythmic cycle of 16 beats. That recording formed the basis of this piece, a reflection on Amiya and our friendship.
